Open Source Software Internships, The Open Planning Project
I am writing to let you know about software internships at The Open
Planning Project (TOPP). We are a non-profit technology incubator based
in New York City, and we are interested in connecting with students who
believe in the positive potential of open source. We're a pretty unique
place.
We build open source software and use it as a lever for social change.
We're a small (45 person), growing organization, and we think of this
internship as a test run for full time employment and as a way to seed
projects with great potential. A summer with us means you will steer
your own project, with mentoring from talented open source developers.
We work with you to spec out your project, and you build something real
in ten weeks. By the end of the summer, you'll have something real to
show off to the world, both live on our site and as source code you can
actually show someone. You definitely won't be the office barista.
Some current projects:
-- GeoServer -- is a robust GIS server that's used for modeling, land
planning, and collaborative mapping. GeoServer plays well with Google
Earth, OpenLayers, and a variety of other tools, and it is becoming the
standard for serving and sharing geodata.
-- OpenPlans -- is a web toolkit and community network for social
change. Includes blogs, wikis, to-do lists, shared mapping. OpenPlans is
used by environmental advocates, conference organizers, and neighborhood
cycling groups.
-- Melkjug -- our youngest project, is a newsfeed aggregator and tuner.
It sifts through a big pile of articles that you may want to read and
picks out a small pile of articles based on what's most important to you.
TOPP is a great way to spend a summer. We have a collegial atmosphere
and great perks (including MetroCard and free lunch). Our beautiful West
Village offices are a great place to work. Summer also means ultimate
frisbee, happy hour on the deck, Shakespeare in the Park, and the US Open.
We're looking for CS students with big ideas and a solid base, including
object-oriented programming, databases, and design patterns. Quick,
creative thinkers who care about what they build. AJAX, Python, and/or
Java come in handy. Open source and/or web experience is a big plus.
If the idea of an open source summer gets you excited, get in touch via
jobs@openplans.org. Include your resume, a good cover letter, and a code
sample. Let us know why you are interested in working at The Open
Planning Project.
